Ok, so I will be honest with you. When I came across Kimberly Walla Photography, my heart leaped a bit and I couldn't stop scrolling through her pictures. There is so much life and beauty that she catches, you can't help but feel the emotion in her images. I know that you will leave this interview inspired to shoot and create.
Thank you, Kimberly, for taking the time to share your words and talent!
How long have you been shooting and what inspired you to begin with?
Throughout high school and college I took photography courses but did not become passionate about photography until after the birth of my first child in 2008. Of course everything changed with digital photography. After I bought a DSLR, I was hooked. Professionally I have been shooting for 2 1/2 years.
What is your current favorite image and why?
This image of my children dancing together on my bed is my favorite at the moment. I love that it captures both of their personalities. The movement of my daughter’s hair, the light, and the timeless feel all make me swoon!
Describe your work in three or four words.
Emotive, Timeless, and Authentic
What is in your camera bag and favorite lens to shoot with?
The D800 is my main body and the D700 is my backup. I have a 35 1.4, 50 1.4, 105 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and a Lensbaby Composer Pro. My favorite lens (lately) is the 35mm although I love them all!
How/Where do you find your inspiration and creativity?
Shooting images that capture the raw natural personality of my subject at that time and place. Images of my family (mainly my children) just doing what they do daily. For instance, in 20 years I would never remember how adorable my daughter was in this image running in her ballet outfit wearing her converse and backpack on her way to class. However, this image will forever invoke that sweet memory and give my daughter a glimpse of her personality at that age. These are the type of images I want to create for my clients.
What are your current goals?
I love photographing children and lifestyle family sessions and would love to eventually do some commercial work. So combining those into a profitable business would be my ultimate goal.
One word of wisdom that you would like to offer or encouragement to fellow photographers?
Shoot what you love as often as you can! This will make you happy while fine-tuning your craft. For me, it’s photographing my children every day if possible. I get so excited to sit down and edit those everyday images of my children more than anything!
